The
Michigan State University Center for Community and Economic Development
was awarded a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to
develop innovative economic development strategies for three northern
Michigan regions, NEMCOG, Northwest Michigan Council of Governments and
Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning and Development Commission. The goal is to create strategies that enable each
region to compete successfully in the global knowledge economy.
Additional match funds from several MSU units will bring the total
project investment to approximately $525,000.
“Our job is to identify and provide access to the right
combination of university and other resources for our regional
partners, without imposing any big new costs on them or us,”
said Rex LaMore, director of the MSU Center for Community and
Economic Development (CCED).
“We are enthusiastic about this opportunity to work with MSU on
this innovative and needed approach to economic development in
the NEMCOG region,” said Diane Rekowski, Executive Director
of the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments.
