US 23 HERITAGE ROUTE
Sunrise Side
Coastal Highway
Nearly 200 miles of spectacular
scenic views of Lake Huron and an astounding array of large public
forest, park, and recreational properties await travelers on the
Sunrise Side Coastal Highway Heritage Route. From Standish to
Mackinaw City, the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway follows the coast
through Arenac, Iosco, Alcona, Alpena, Presque Isle, and Cheboygan
Counties. These counties offer some of the most extensive and
significant recreational, ecological, historical and cultural sites
in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The northern Lake Huron shoreline is
graced with large tracts of publicly-owned lands making northeastern
Michigan accessible to residents and visitors alike.
Due to its recreational
significance, in 2004, US 23, from Standish to Mackinaw City, was
designated a Recreational Heritage Route as part of the Heritage
Route Program managed by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
