GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) GOALS & OBJECTIVES

 

GOALS: 

I.            Through GIS, assist member communities to serve their general public by providing timely, accurate information and technical training on computer systems whenever possible. 

II.          Assist GIS efforts to plan effectively for the future development of the region's land area, with an emphasis on preserving traditional values (sense of community, cooperation) and the quality of life of its citizens (having a good place to work, recreate, receive needed goods & services, and receive education & training). 

III.            Through planning (using GIS), assist regional efforts to provide adequate and safe transportation for all citizens, to and from places of employment, education & training, shopping & recreation, and medical services. 

OBJECTIVES: 

1) Build a reliable and usable digital data base as completely as possible within the 8-county region. The information will include, but not be limited to: 

            Land use information & Updates Water Wells

            Zoning Hospitals

            Watershed Boundaries Police/Fire buildings

            Geology- surface & bedrock Traffic counts

            Soils- general & detailed Recreation facilities

            Roads (names & locations) Landfills- both closed and operating

            Parcel boundaries & attributes Proposed project locations

            School districts Police/Fire districts

            Business & industry locations 

2) Update, convert, and organize the digital data into easily manageable divisions for convenient access, and for analysis to facilitate the completion of on-going projects. 

3) Provide direction and encouragement for the development of local GIS facilities throughout the region. The development of data from other sources can aid in the overall regional planning process. 

4) To ensure maximum productivity: a) obtain staff training to the greatest extent possible, and b) obtain and maintain state-of-the-art computer equipment, software, & periferals to the greatest extent financially possible. 

5) Pass on technical skills and training to member communities whenever possible. 

6) Explore all cooperative efforts to maximize efficiency between local units of governments, emergency services providers, transportation providers, agencies, and public/private partnerships.
